March 7, 1972 Tues.

Dear Diary:

I got an 80 on Math test (she curved it). Had a pop Spanish test. Boy am I having problems with friends. Some girls are really being mean with me. I don’t really want to go around them in school. They seem to try & outdo me not grade wise but you know. There is noone really in my class I can hang around with. Outside of school doesn’t bother me too much. But I sure wish I had much more friends real ones. I went to Simones.

BYE!!!!

Note: Having friends is always a struggle for teenagers and I was no different.

Diary: March 8-9

March 8, 1972 Wed.

Dear Diary:

Lets see. I wore my masaya blouse to school & I never got so many compliments. So now everyone will have one. I hope you to now that I’m here when Glee Club sings in Centro-America. I stayed for Glee Club. I got alot compliments on everything. I talked to Missy. I went to Simmons. I watched T.V. Did homework. PLEASE PRAY I can sleep with no problems tonight no getting scared PLEASE! Last night I read groth story & I couldn’t sleep well last night. Pray I beg you that I can sleep alright tonight

BYE!!!

Note:  Masaya was a city in Nicaragua known for its handicrafts. They had a beautiful market where you could purchase beautifully embroidered items, leather products, and many different souvenirs.

I must have been super tired when I wrote this as I hadn’t slept well after reading a ghost story the night before.

I also was hoping that I would be in town when the Glee Club sang at the Universidad Centroamericana. It was run by the Jesuits.

March 9, 1972 Thurs.

Dear Diary:

Lets see in school I a 8/15 in History, a 78 on Math test & a 87 in Spanish. We miss all of P.E. We had this man talk to us abut Drugs. 7th, 8th & 9th. Well I ask a question I had my had up for an hour! & when he finally asks me he goes you in the yellow blouse I look all round I had a green blouse on. Anyway I ask what the police do with drugs when they get it & he never answered it he avoided it. Boy!!! I went to eye doctor but never got in. We went to movies and saw “Diamonds are Forever” First James Bond movie I ever seen.

BYE

Note: I always remember myself as being shy but I am proud of the 14-year-old who wasn’t afraid to ask a question in an assembly. I’m still waiting for an answer, lol.

Diamonds are Forever was the final James Bond movie starring Sir Thomas Sean Connery.

Don't think we had any "drug" talks down there. Funny note: When we moved from C.R. to Bogotá, I was going into 9th grade. We were advised not go to the main gringo school (totally English curriculum, N. American high school system) because it was riddled with DRUGS! So we went to a small British school, very international student body, British and Australian teachers, high academic standards). Drugs? Yep, plenty, they just did a better job of hiding it. Actually the big drug scare was just marijuana....I never saw hard drugs used. Times have changed.

Those embroidered blouses are so beautiful! I had some huipils from Guatemala that I would display when I shared about my Latin American experience. I wore a few of them and always got comments. I felt proud knowing I had been part of that culture for almost 2 years😊 Wouldn't it be fun to go to Nicaragua and Guatemala ( or I like to nickname it Guatebuena) - we could be our own tour guides! I know not possible due to health and safety reasons, but I like to imagine it

I still have two blouses from Masaya: one is the traditional cotona, and the other is made out of a different fabric and long sleeves, with lots of embroidery on them 💗

They made beautiful embroidery! How exciting that you still have two of your blouses. You will need to take a picture and share it, 😊

Love this! I was in 7th grade at this time and kept a diary every day. Sadly, I put it in my locker one day before going to spend the night with Jenni, and someone stole everything out of my locker. ☹️ Thanks for the memories! 💞

Your Masaya blouse is very pretty! Did you used to go eat at Tip Top restaurant there?

Hope you were able to sing for the Universidad Centroamericana - very cool!

You were not only brave to ask the excellent question about what happens to the drugs, but you were very persistent to keep your hand up so long!

You have not changed much at all from that picture - bonita then, bonita now! Tootsie
