Dear Diary:
We had assembly today. We have inspectors in our school to see if our school qualifies. Ha!!
Typing was fun today. Were doing a 6 page manuscript. Were starting to pack! I have most of my things packed. We went to Dr. at 3 & he didn’t come to 5:00!!! We got our typhoid shot. Pray I beg you I don’t get a cold. Anja & Noni have one!!! Uh! I watched T.V. have to wash my hair.

Note: Our school was being evaluated for accreditation. I believe we got it.
We had to get a typhoid vaccination to help prevent us from getting typhoid, which is a high fever caused by salmonella bacteria. Food and water contaminated with the bacteria or even close exposure to someone carrying the disease can cause the illness. Symptoms in a person start slowly and can take one to three weeks to manifest according to the Mayo Clinic. It is treated with antibiotics. The typhoid vaccine we got was for salmonella Typhi which is deadly. Fortunately, we never got this or malaria for which we continued to take the nasty-tasting malaria pills every Sunday.
Dad taught us to pack all of our belongings in one carry-on. We always traveled stand-by and this way we didn’t have the fear of losing our luggage. It has served me well as an adult when I travel now.

Dear Diary:

I lost my Spanish book hope I find it. Listen please make Penny & Gretel be happy. I know we should loved them more etc. but I've always been afraid of dogs. I am justing getting over it. Oh well have to go to sleep.

Note: Penny was a boxer and Gretel was a dachshund and I was terrified of them. They stayed outside. As a young child, I was knocked over by an aunt’s great dane and became frightened of dogs. I was getting over the fear when I visited my grandmother and her black chihuahua bit my large toe and I lost my toenail. In his defense, I was in a rocker and rocked over his tail. This set me back quite a few years. As a young adult, some friends gave me Lady, a one-year-old mixed collie, and she became my constant companion until she died at age 14.

Note: The glee club sang at the Colegio Teresiano. It was very special to leave the American Nicaraguan School during school hours, ride a bus, and miss classes! The Colegio Teresiano was a Catholic all-girl school run by the Maryknoll Sisters. Two of them were among the four missionaries assassinated by the El Salvador National Guard in 1980. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1980_murders_of_U.S._missionaries_in_El_Salvador
“And Four to Grow” was a novel by Charlotte Paul written in 1961 based on the emotional growing pains of her family.
I had completely forgotten about the Maryknoll Sisters, probably last hearing about them when we lived there. You got me curious to read about the 1980 murders.
I learn something new with each of your posts! Did not know of the link between the missionaries killed and the Teresiano! FaceBook needs to get its act together... Tootsie
I remember hearing about those missionaries. I remember feeling so sad, disbelief, and shedding a tear or two. Any news about Latin American draws my attention to it . El Salvador was another country I had ties to.
Wow! (The link on the missionaries)
That is such a wonderful family photo! Hope Facebook cooperates. These are so fun to read. Love, Amanda S
