My diary - June 20-22, 1972

Celebrating Grandpa's 71st Birthday
Celebrating Grandpa's 71st Birthday

June 20, 1972 Tues.

Dear Diary:

We (Mary, David, Becky & I) went to the zoo. I washed my hair before we went. Boy, did we ever walk. Saw a gorrilla, elephants, tigers etc. We were there till about 20 to 3. We went to eat at McDonalds. Mary drove us all around through Metropolitan Park etc. We walk through the wilderness of Ridge High Park. Got my shoes full of mud. Came back around 5. Had spaggati. Mrs. Covey called me (went to her house later) wants to teach me how to make noodles. Mary’s spending the night.

BYE!!

Note: What a fun trip to the zoo. We felt so grown up going with Mary. I never dreamed then that I would actually go to Africa and see elephants in their natural environment. We went this summer and the bus from the airport in Zimbabwe had to stop for elephants beside the highway.

Going to McDonalds was a real treat as we didn’t have one in Managua at that time.

I love walking and hiking now but I wasn't a big fan then. The Metropolitan Park is beautiful and I remember Uncle Norm taking us biking there on several occasions.

I love my creative spelling, especially ‘spaggati’ (spaghetti).

Dear Diary:

First day of summer & it was so cold & muddy. We all got up late. Watched T.V. Mary stayed till about  2:30. We went to Uncle Bill’s. I bought Grandpa a campabls mug for his birthday. We went to Little Larry’s house. We ate supper there. We had spaggatti again tonight (2 nights in a row). Little Danny’s cute. Looks so much like little Larry. Aunt Angela came back from California & we had the pleasure to see her at Larry’s.

BYE!!!

Note: More creative spelling campabls (Campbell’s) mug.

Uncle Bill was my Grandpa’s brother and his wife was Helen but to distinguish her from my Aunt Helen we always called her Bill’s Helen.

We then went to Larry and Kay’s house (my mom’s first cousins) for dinner. Kay made the best spaghetti! Spaghetti is still one of my favorite foods. Kay and Larry had the cutest little boys.

I love how I was being sarcastic about my Aunt Angela as she wasn’t one of my favorites.

Dear Diary:

I got up late as usual. Watched T.V. Made Grandpa's and Grandma’s lunch. Put my contacts on. We went over to Aunt Helen’s. Poor Mary, she got one of her wisdom teeth pulled out & she looks as if she has a tennis ball inside her one cheek. We ate supper there & celebrated Grandpas birthday. He got 2 watches. I’m spending the night. Poor Mary, shes really sick if she gets up. We talked & talked & got caught up.

BYE!

Note: We had a fun time celebrating my Grandpa’s birthday. He was going to be 71 on the 23rd and I thought at the time he was ancient!

I am not sure how Mary and I talked and talked with her being all swollen but I bet the pain pills had kicked in. We still talk alot on the phone. I consider her my older sister and am blessed to have her in my life.

Super nice family - great that you got to visit them and at the same time learn what life was like in the USA. Since we visited our grandparents in Mexico City we missed out on those wonderful very American things you did with yours.

In a previous post you showed us a picture of the green stamps - what a memory! When as a young bride living in Sunshine Louisiana and learning about life in the USA, I diligently pasted those into the books and looked forward to buying a new toaster or such!

Keep on entertaining us Susie! Thanks Tootsie

Enjoying reading about the Summer of '72😀 You all were so thoughtful in choosing gifts for each other- very special ❤️s . I don't think I viewed my grandparents as being real old , just that they looked as grandparents should. Now that I'm a gran I don't think I'm there yet ( but sure feel like it!)

I very much agree about someone who is 71; I now regard that as “middle age!” Possibly even early “middle age……..”

OMG, I am now as old as Grandpa was then (and there are days I feel ancient). I love you all so much and really looked forward to your visits and still do. Wisdom teeth suck ! For a long time I thought Uncle Bill's wife's name was "Bill's Helen", duh, LOL. Love you, Mary
