Dear Diary:
Well lets see. Dad got me so mad I started crying. Nobody really saw me. Well we all went to Uncle Leo’s party for the 4th of July. I decided to use some of Grandmas advice “Live each day for itself” it really works. I went with Aunt Helen, Greg, Mary & Grandma & pa. I had fun. They had bag pipers, songs etc. I met a Norine’s daughter Nora. I played badminton with Mary, Nora but at the end with Dave & later Beck with two guys Mark & Scot. I liked the party.
BYE!
Note: Uncle Leo was Grandma’s younger brother; Norine was the daughter of Uncle Leo and Aunt Erma. I had forgotten Grandma’s advice. It still holds true today: Live each day for itself although I change it a bit and try to live each day to its fullest. It was a fun party.
I am not sure why Dad made me angry but he did know how to push my buttons.

Dear Diary:
We got up early. Dad & David went with the suitcases 1st. It was pretty hard saying good-bye but noone cried. Aunt Helen dropped us off at the airport. She didn’t come in. The flight to Miami was bumpy. I saw Mrs. Rothruch & Lucie (works for Dad) in Miami Airport. Cathy Sue came out with P.J. & my birthday present from Missy (a big stuffed Snoppy & books. Mr. Rothsuh on same plane as we to Guatemala. Its pretty here. Zavalas met us & we ate supper at their house.
BYE!!
Note: Mrs. Rothschuh was our A.N.S. high school principal. Kathy Sue is Missy’s sister who lived in Miami. P.J. was her baby boy. It was so sweet of her to bring me Missy’s gift. In the 70’s anyone could go to the airport gates to meet or say goodbye to passengers. I remember the Snoopy. It was the size of a big pillow.
The Zavalas had been stationed in Nicaragua and had moved to Guatemala. Mr. Zavala was with Bank of America and his wife Rachel was a good friend of mom’s. They used to hang out together.

Dear Diary:
Happy 4th of July. We got up early & had breakfast in our room. Mrs. Zavala picked us up & we dropped Dad, David & Danny at the C.C. for Golf & we went sightseeing. We girls went to Antigua. We saw a house full of antiques, churches, stores, etc. It very pretty. Mom bought candles. We ate at a hotel were Mom ate 16 years ago. The Hingst came in today. Mom & I walked to a few stores. I wrote Missy a letter. Zavalas picked us up & we kids ate there while our parents ate out. David H. always disagrees with everything so imagine my night.
BYE!!!
Notes: Jim Hingst was with Texaco and was stationed in Nicaragua too. I am not sure what they were doing in Guatemala but it is neat how we all met up there. They were later stationed in Santo Domingo and we visited them there. Mom bought Becky and me Guatemalan ponchos. I still have mine. Becky’s was yellow, brown, and orange. Mine was turquoise blue. I still love to wear it. I wonder if Becky still has hers?
In Colombia, they call ponchos "ruanas", which is basically the same thing...a wool square with a slit in the middle to poke your head thru. Bogotá mornings are pretty cool (8,600' elevation) so even tho most people had jackets, a lot still used ruanas. They came in handy at school: folded just so, they made a nice cushion to sit on the hard wood chairs.
The poncho is wonderful; why haven’t I seen you wear it? They’ve become fashionable again since Martha Stewart emerged from prison wearing one she had just knitted. I think your glasses are funky in a good way!

That poncho looks lovely on you! I had one that was purple. How special that you were in Guatemala 😊 I remember going to a hotel/restaurant as an exchange student in 1974. It had an open grassy area and one of the girls had her picture taken by a parrot (loro)because her name was Laurel . 🦜
Fun!
